An extension is on the cards, BCCI wants Rahul Dravid to coach Team India in South Africa – Magazine Creations

BCCI is likely to offer another two-year contract to Rahul Dravid, but as of now, the IFDA wants the coach to guide the team during the tour of South Africa as the modalities are being worked out.

Dravid, under whose coaching India finished runners-up in both the World Test Championship (WTC) and ODI World Cup, has a good record in the last two years, and many people in the BCCI believe that retaining him will allow the senior team to gain continuity.

India will tour South Africa between December 10, 2023 and January 7, 2024 for three matches each of T20Is and ODIs and two Test matches.

“BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has been holding discussions with Dravid over the past week. It is clear that the finer details of the new contract are yet to be worked out.

“But BCCI wants Dravid to go to South Africa with the Test team,” a senior BCCI official told PTI on condition of anonymity.

Would he be willing to go on one tour without signing a contract?

“The contract will be drafted but the Test series is important and even if he does not go to the T20I series in SA, he can join (the squad) for the ODIs,” the source said.

In the case of VVS Laxman, he may coach the team during the first phase of the series, which would also allow him to get a direct assessment of the ‘A’ team.

“Laxman has his hands full with NCA work plus there is another U-19 World Cup coming up. There is a group tour to South Africa.

“He is also involved in cricketing matters in relation to the construction of a new facility for the NCA which is well underway,” the source added.

However, Dravid is yet to announce his decision as he also has multiple offers to become the team manager/team mentor from IPL franchises which is a huge sum with much less involvement.

However, he may also reflect on the good work produced by his team which also includes batting coach Vikram Rathore, bowling coach Paras Mampre and fielding coach T Dileep.

It will be interesting to know the nature of Dravid’s extension, whether it is for a year keeping in mind the upcoming T20 World Cup or even 2025 covering the entire ongoing WTC tournament and the Champions Trophy, which is scheduled to be hosted by Pakistan at the moment.
