Asian Games 2023: Parveen Hooda assures India of boxing medal, Nikhat Zareen withdraws; Check details – Magazine Creations

World Championships bronze medalist boxer Parveen Hooda on October 1 assured India of a medal and also secured a Paris Olympics quota by moving into the semifinals in the 57kg category, but Nikhat Zareen withdrew from the semifinals at the Asian Games.

At the 2022 World Boxing Championships, Parveen won the bronze medal in the 63kg category. She defeated Uzbekistan’s Sitora Tordibekova unanimously in the quarter-finals of the 2023 Asian Games.

In the women’s 50kg competition, Zareen was forced to take the bronze medal after losing to Rakast Chuthamat from Thailand, with the latter winning 2-1 via split decision in the semi-final contest. India won the first round, but their rival won the next two rounds.

Earlier, Jasmine Lamboria, the bronze medalist at the Commonwealth Games, was eliminated from the 60kg competition after losing in the second round to North Korean boxer Won Eunjeong in the quarter-final match.

According to details, two-time world champions Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Preeti Pawar (54kg), Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) and Narinder Berwal (92kg) have secured Olympic quotas in their respective categories.

Other sports wins:

India’s Tajinder Pal Singh Toor clocked 19.83m in his final throw and the defender clinched the Asian Games gold medal in the shot put event. This is his second consecutive gold medal at the Asian Championships, where she achieved a best throw of 20.36 metres.

Avinash Sable also won the gold medal in the men’s 3000m steeplechase. This is India’s first track and field gold at the 2023 Asian Games.

Harmilan Baines finished second in the women’s 1,500 meters and claimed a silver medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games. Ajay Kumar won silver, while 2018 gold medalist Jenson Johnson took bronze in the 1,500m final. In the long jump final, M Sreeshankar won the silver medal.

In the women’s heptathlon, Nandini Ajasara won the bronze medal, while Seema Punia won the bronze medal in the women’s discus throw.
