In an extraordinary display at the 19th edition of the Asian Games, held in Hangzhou, China, Indian athletes showed determination and greatness. With an impressive total of 107 medals, India’s 655 representatives surpassed the previous record set in Jakarta 2018.
India’s impressive tally – which includes 28 gold, 38 silver and 41 bronze – surpasses the 70 medals won by the smaller team of 570 athletes four years ago.
China topped the medal count, winning 200 gold medals, followed by Japan and South Korea. India’s contribution was significant, considering that only four countries crossed the 100-medal mark in Hangzhou.
The Indian shooters stole the show with 22 medals, seven of which glittered in gold. Athletics also had a special moment of glory with Neeraj Chopra defending his javelin title. In total, the track and field events resulted in India bagging six gold, 14 silver and nine bronze medals.
Shooting proved another feather in India’s cap, as the composite team clinched all five gold medals available in its category. The cricket and kabaddi teams kept the gold rush alive with two wins each, while the victory of the men’s hockey team not only brought home the gold medal but also secured a coveted berth for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Chirag Shetty and Satwiksraj Rankireddy’s win in badminton marked India’s first gold medal in men’s doubles at the Games. The number of gold was completed with victories in squash, tennis and equestrian competitions. The Indian men’s and women’s cricket teams won two gold medals.
But it wasn’t just about the medals. Hangzhou served as a gateway to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, offering 74 classes in various sports. India got six of these, with boxing leading the charge. Nikhat Zareen, Priti Pawar, Parveen Hooda and Lovlina Borgohain have got their tickets to Paris. Athletics and men’s hockey have been added to the number of sessions, ensuring India’s strong representation in the French capital.
