Champions Trophy 2025 to be moved from Pakistan or held in hybrid model: reports – Magazine Creations

Reports on November 27 said that the 2025 edition of the Champions Trophy, the second-biggest one-day international (ODI) cricket tournament after the World Cup, will be moved from Pakistan or played under a hybrid model.

Media reports claimed that the tournament could be moved to the United Arab Emirates, or played within a hybrid model similar to the Asian Cup, with matches scheduled in both countries.

Pakistan is currently scheduled to host the 2025 Champions Trophy, but there is speculation that the International Cricket Council (ICC) may come up with an alternative plan as India may decide not to send its national team to the neighboring country for political and security reasons.

A similar scenario played out during the recent Asian Cup, which was originally scheduled to be held in Pakistan. However, after India decided not to send its team to the country, the tournament was held under a hybrid model in Sri Lanka.

Four matches in the Asia Cup were held in Pakistan, while the rest of the tournament was held in Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has urged the ICC to sign 2025 Champions Trophy hosting rights agreements with it, stressing that the Pakistan Cricket Board should be compensated if India refuses to travel to the country for political and security reasons, reports said in November. 26.

A highly reliable source in the PCB told the news agency PTI Although the ICC has designated Pakistan as the host country for the tournament, the world body is yet to sign the important hosting agreement with it.

The source reportedly revealed that PCB Chairman Zaka Ashraf and Chief Operating Officer Salman Naseer met the ICC Executive Board in Ahmedabad to discuss hosting the Champions Trophy in Pakistan in February-March 2025.

“Pakistani officials discussed the possibility of the BCCI board once again refusing to send their team to Pakistan and made it clear that in any situation the ICC should avoid taking unilateral decisions on the tournament,” this person was quoted as saying.

He said PCB officials told the ICC that if India refuses to play in Pakistan on security grounds, the world body must appoint an independent security agency.

The PCB also said that the agency can contact Pakistani government and security officials to assess the security situation of the participating teams including India.

PCB officials said several top teams toured Pakistan in the last two years without any security concerns.

“They have also made it clear that if India does not send its team and takes its matches to another country, the ICC should compensate Pakistan for the same,” the source was quoted as saying.
