A man in Australia has filed a class-action lawsuit against a hospital after staff “encouraged” him to attend his wife’s C-section, which he says caused him a “psychotic illness.”
Anil Koppula was struck down in the Victorian Supreme Court in Melbourne last week after filing a lawsuit seeking A$1 billion (about $643 million) in psychological injury damages from the Royal Women’s Hospital, Australia’s 7 News reported.
His wife gave birth by caesarean section at the hospital in 2018. Years later, however, Koppula came forward and claimed the hospital and its staff breached their duty of care when they “encouraged” and “allowed” him to attend the delivery, the report said. store.

The procedure is often used when doctors believe it is safer for the health of mom and baby compared to a vaginal delivery. Koppula said he saw his wife’s blood and organs during the procedure, which caused him to develop a “psychotic illness” that led to the “breakdown of his marriage,” according to the lawsuit.
The Royal Women’s Hospital denied breaching a duty of care to Koppula during the proceedings.

Koppula represented himself in the case. Judge James Gorton dismissed the case last week as an “abuse of process”.

The dad underwent a medical exam as part of the legal process, which found that “the degree of psychiatric disability resulting from the plaintiff’s injury alleged in the claim does not meet the threshold,” according to 7News.
Koppula said he disagreed with the medical board’s determination but did not file documents to challenge the findings.

“I am therefore satisfied that the legal effect of the Medical Board’s decision is that Mr. Coppoula is simply unable, as a matter of law, to recover damages for non-pecuniary loss,” the judge said of the lawsuit.
