This is not the first time that England and New Zealand have opened the World Cup finals in Ahmedabad. In the 1996 Wills World Cup curtain-raiser, New Zealand beat England by 11 points at the Narendra Modi Stadium (formerly known as the Sardar Patel Stadium). New Zealand’s Nathan Astle won the Man of the Match award with 101 runs in 132 deliveries.
