ICC suspends Sri Lanka Cricket Board over government interference – Magazine Creations

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday suspended the Sri Lanka Cricket Board over the government’s findings. The development comes days after the country’s sports minister sacked the country’s entire cricket board over corruption allegations. The Sri Lanka Court of Appeal later overturned the decision, reinstating all officials pending a full hearing.

“The ICC Board met today and determined that Sri Lanka Cricket is in serious breach of its obligations as a member, in particular, the requirements to administer its affairs independently and ensure that there is no government interference in the governance, regulation and/or administration of cricket in Sri Lanka,” the ICC said. In a statement, the terms of the suspension will be decided by the Board of Directors of the International Criminal Court in due course.

Disappointing performance in the 2023 World Cup

This comes because the Sri Lankan cricket team was unable to perform well during the ICC World Cup 2023. The team managed to win only 2 out of 9 matches in the league and is currently ranked 9th on the World Cup points table. Sri Lanka were particularly miserable against India as the team finished with double-digit scores in the final of the World Cup and Asia Cup.

Sri Lankan Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe has taken the decision to sack the cricket board due to rampant corruption in the cricket body. The minister said the cricketing authorities lacked the necessary moral and ethical legitimacy to retain their positions. The minister also formed an interim cricket board headed by 1996 World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga. “Sri Lankan cricket has become known as the most corrupt institution in the country,” Arjuna Ranatunga said. “I want to change that image,” he added.

The decision was later overturned by the Sri Lanka Court of Appeal which reinstated the country’s cricket board. A court official said, “The council’s return will continue for two weeks, during which the court will consider the case again.”
