India vs New Zealand, ICC World Cup 2023: Shubman Gill has overtaken Pakistan skipper Babar Azam as the No.1 in One Day International (ODI) cricket. The 24-year-old Indian has been brilliant in all formats of the game this year and never misses to show off his impressive technique. But ahead of the ICC World Cup semi-final match between India and New Zealand, former Indian skipper Kapil Dev expressed his concerns about Shubman Gill and used Sachin Tendulkar’s analogy for himself.
While speaking on a podcast with Ranveer Allahabadia, Kapil Dev spoke about Sachin Tendulkar’s talent when he made his debut in 1989 and how he was scared if the 15-year-old could sustain that amount of success. Kapil Dev expressed the same reservations about Shubman Gill, citing his exceptional batting skills.
“He (Sachin Tendulkar) was very young, just 15, so you treat him like a child, but I think within six months from the way he played, the way he conducted himself, we understood that he had some special talent. But the only fear these guys have is Talented players is that when you get a lot at a young age, can you keep going, that is the thing we fear,” Kapil Dev said in a chat with Ranveer.
The World Cup winning skipper mentioned Shubman Gill in the same answer and said, “Today Shubman Gill has no problems, but as he grows older you ask where are his distractions, as today you have only one focus but with the advent of distractions, his thought processes are changing too. “
India vs New Zealand
The Indian legend’s comments came as India prepares to face New Zealand in the ICC World Cup semi-final on November 15 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. The Rohit Sharma-led team is gearing up to avenge their semi-final defeat in the ICC World Cup 2019, and India have shown their ability to dominate all teams in the current edition of the World Cup and keep the trophy at home.
