IOA forms three-member ad hoc wrestling committee after WFI suspension – Magazine Creations

The IOA appointed Bhupinder Singh Bajwa as Chairman of the Committee with MM Somaiya and Manjusha Kanwar as members of the Committee to manage the day-to-day affairs of the organisation.

In a letter dated December 27, 2024, the Indian Olympic Federation said: “The ad hoc committee is entrusted with supervising and supervising the operations of the WFI, which includes selecting athletes, submitting entries to athletes to participate in international events, organizing sporting activities, and handling bank accounts.” and manage websites and other related activities.”

The Sports Ministry on Sunday suspended the wrestling federation, three days after electing new officials with Brij Bhushan Singh loyalist Sanjay Singh as president, and also asked the IOA to form an ad hoc committee to manage the affairs of the sports body.

In a statement, IOA President PT Usha said the newly elected WFI officials took arbitrary decisions in violation of their constitutional provisions and also violated the principles of good governance.

“The IOC recently realized that the recently appointed President and WFI officials had taken arbitrary decisions in violation of their own constitutional provisions and against the principles of good governance espoused by the IOC, as well as without following due process that annulled the IOC’s rulings,” the statement said. Appointment of a special committee.

“This not only highlights the governance gap within the union, but also indicates a marked departure from established norms.

“As the IOC considers adherence to governance standards to be vital to ensure fair play, transparency and accountability, to protect the interests of athletes as espoused by the IOC and to ensure continuity, it has been decided to appoint an ad hoc committee….”

Hours after being elected as WFI president on Thursday, Sanjay announced that the national age group championships will be held from December 28 in Gonda in UP, which is the constituency of BJP MP Brij Bhushan.

The government, while suspending the WWF, cited its “hasty announcement” to organize the U-15 and U-20 national teams “without following due process and not giving sufficient notice to the wrestlers” of the preparations.

The Ministry felt that the new WFI was operating under the complete control of its former officials, which was not in accordance with the National Sports Code.

Sanjay’s election as IWF president led to Rio Olympics medalist Sakshi Malik announcing her retirement from wrestling, while Tokyo Games bronze medalist Bajrang Punia returned the Padma Shri to the government. World Championship medalist Vinesh Phogat followed suit when she brought home the Khel Ratna and Arjuna awards.
