IPL 2024: No one would have bought Ben Stokes, Aakash Chopra gives ‘two cents’ on CSK’s release of England cricketer – Magazine Creations

Ben Stokes will not play in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL). Now, he has also been released by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) while the CSK management expressed their support for Stokes’ decision.

He plans to undergo knee surgery and is aiming to make a full recovery before England’s comprehensive Test series in India. Stokes’ contribution to CSK was minimal in the victorious 2023 season, restricted to two matches with mediocre performances.

Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra speculated that CSK would not have been likely to retain Stokes even if he had been available for IPL 2024, considering his injury concerns. Chopra also questioned any other franchise’s willingness to invest $16.25 crore on Stokes, given his recent fitness issues.

“Ben Stokes said he won’t play in the Indian Premier League. Would Chennai have kept him? That’s a big question. And in my opinion they wouldn’t have. Would any other team have bought him for 16.25 crores? My two cents,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel. “This wouldn’t have happened.”

Stokes’ absence, coupled with Ambati Rayudu’s retirement, frees up a significant amount of CSK’s budget. Rayudu’s exit from the game came after the 2023 season. This financial liberalization provides CSK with an opportunity to devise a new strategy for the upcoming season.

CSK has now left with $31.4 Crores

CSK also released several other players, including New Zealander Kyle Jamieson and South Africa’s Dwayne Pretorius. South African Sisanda Magala and local players Bhagath Varma, Subharanshu Senapati and Akash Singh were also let go. The move leaves CSK with a budget of Rs $31.4 crore for the 2024 season.

Teams had a deadline of November 26 to announce their retained and released cricketers. However, they can still trade players until December 12. The player auction for the 2024 season is scheduled to be held on December 19 in Dubai.
