Israeli authorities are trying to figure out how a heavily armored, but unarmored, tank was stolen from a military training zone after it was found dumped in garbage.
The Israeli Merkava 2 tank has disappeared from a training zone in northern Israel near the coastal city of Haifa, the Israeli military said on Wednesday. The training zone is closed to the public when in use, but otherwise accessible to passers-by.
Police said the 65-tonne tank was found abandoned at a scrap yard near a military base. In a video from the scene, the green army tank rises next to rusted scraps of metal and other industrial waste.

The military said the Merkava 2 was decommissioned years ago and was unarmed. He said it had most recently been used as a “stationary vehicle for troop exercises”.
Police said they have arrested two suspects in connection with the theft.
