Jasprit Bumrah was given a short break by the team management to visit his family. The star Indian fast bowler will be conspicuously absent from the second ODI against Australia to be played at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. Bumrah’s absence from the squad was confirmed just hours before the start of the match, according to an official update from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
“He went to visit his family and was given a short break by the team management,” BCCI posted on X (formerly Twitter).
BCCI’s post was not received well by many on social media. “Bumrah receives a salary of Rs 7 crore per annum from BCCI. Despite receiving this salary, he did not play a single match for a year in 2022. After playing one match in the Asia Cup, he returned to Mumbai before his next match “Now he needs to rest again. He is a strange player, he has no patriotism!” one user wrote on X.
“I am on national duties so everything else can wait,” says new father MS Dhoni, another user wrote while referring to what Mahi did when he became a father.
“Big fan of Bumrah, but if he needed a ‘break’ in the middle of a 3-match/5-calendar-day series, perhaps he should have been rested or not picked at all. Or if there was an emergency, at least say it was done.” “That’s in so many words without intruding on his privacy. This ‘short break’ action paints a very bad picture IMO,” came another user.
“Brother, how many annual papers are left? Will you also take some during the World Cup? If so, on how many days and in which matches?” one user wrote.
This year has been an eventful one for Bumrah, who returned in late August after a long spell out with a back injury. His suspension has led to him missing several important tournaments, including last year’s Asia Cup in the UAE, the T20 World Cup in Australia, and the 2023 IPL season.
His first assignment on his return was to captain a second-string Indian side against Ireland. Then he was included in the Asian Cup and World Cup teams. It is worth noting that he took a short leave during the Asian Cup to attend the birth of his first child.
Bumrah is replaced by fast bowler Mukesh Kumar, who is also set to represent India in the upcoming Asian Games in China. The BCCI assured fans that Bumrah will return to the Indian team for the crucial third match against Australia in Rajkot on September 27.
