FIFA announced that it had imposed a three-year ban on former Spanish Federation president Luis Rubiales, after he forced a kiss on the lips of World Cup winner Gheni Hermoso, Agence France-Presse reported on Monday.
The Zurich-based FIFA did not publish details of the ruling reached by its disciplinary committee, which investigated accusations related to basic rules of decent behavior and behaving in a way that brings the sport of football and/or FIFA into disrepute. The report said.
FIFA said that the former Spanish Federation president can request the ruling within ten days and then submit an appeal to FIFA.
“The decision remains subject to a possible appeal before the FIFA Appeals Committee,” FIFA said.
Rubiales kissed his player Gini Hermoso on the lips after Spain’s 1-0 victory over England on August 20 in Sydney, Australia.
FIFA has temporarily suspended the former Spanish football president for 90 days after an unwanted kiss during a medal ceremony following Spain’s 1-0 win over England in the Women’s World Cup in Sydney on August 20, 2023.
FIFA added that Rubiales will now be suspended from any football activity for three years.
Agence France-Presse quoted a FIFA statement: “The FIFA Disciplinary Committee banned Luis Rubiales, former president of the Spanish Football Federation, from practicing all football-related activities at the national and international levels for a period of three years.”
“FIFA reiterates its absolute commitment to respect and protect the safety of all persons and to ensure that the basic rules of appropriate behavior are maintained,” the statement read.
