MS Dhoni’s famous number 7 will not be given to any other cricketer; BCCI retires Mahi’s famous jersey number – Magazine Creations

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has retired MS Dhoni’s iconic No. 7 jersey, the Indian Express reported citing BCCI sources. This decision comes three years after Dhoni retired from international cricket.

Previously, the BCCI gave a similar honor to Sachin Tendulkar when they retired the number 10 jersey in 2017. This practice of retiring jerseys is not common in sports and serves as a way of recognizing the extraordinary contributions of legendary players.

The BCCI has informed the national team players, especially the newcomers, that the numbers 7 and 10, which were previously worn by Dhoni and Tendulkar, respectively, are not available. A senior board official told the publication that new players have been banned from opting for these numbers to uphold the legacy of these cricket icons.

“At present, regular players in the Indian team and contenders are allotted 60 odd numbers. So, even if a player is out of the team for about a year or so, we do not give his number to a new player. This means a newcomer has only 30 odd numbers to choose Among them,” the publication Quoted by an official at the Bank of Credit and Commerce International As he says.

Retiring the shirt after cricket

The practice of retiring shirt numbers extends beyond cricket. Italian football club Napoli has retired its number 10 shirt in honor of Diego Maradona. The Chicago Bulls did the same with their No. 23 Michael Jordan jersey.

Jackie Robinson’s No. 42 has been retired by Major League Baseball (MLB). In 1997, MLB universally retired a tribute to the league’s first African-American player.

The National Hockey League (NHL) retired Wayne Gretzky’s number 99 in 1999. Gretzky, known as “The Great One,” holds numerous NHL records. He is widely considered the greatest hockey player of all time.

The Kentucky Boxing and Wrestling Commission retired Muhammad Ali’s No. 3 boxer in 2007. In addition to being the greatest boxer of all time, Ali’s outspoken personality and fight for social justice cemented his status as a global icon.
