Nintendo cancels 2024 video game show in Japan after persistent threats – Magazine Creations

  • Nintendo has canceled its upcoming video game showcase and postponed various events due to persistent threats to the company, its employees and players.
  • The company said in an online statement that it could not ensure the safety of its customers, leading to the decision to cancel Nintendo Live 2024 Tokyo.
  • Postponed competitions include the Japan Championship for the popular game Splatoon, as well as next year’s Mario Kart and Splatoon competitions.

Nintendo has canceled its upcoming video game showcase and postponed several other events due to persistent threats to the company, its employees and players.

“We decided that we could not adequately ensure the safety of our customers,” Nintendo Co. said. based in Kyoto in an online statement on Thursday.

The Japanese developer behind Super Mario and Pokemon has canceled Nintendo Live 2024 Tokyo, which was scheduled for January 20 and 21. The annual event showcases Nintendo games and allows visitors to try them out in a massive Tokyo showroom.

Nintendo has also postponed several competitions, including Japan’s championship for the popular ink shooter game Splatoon, originally scheduled for later in December, as well as next year’s Mario Kart and Splatoon competitions.

The company declined to elaborate on the threats, but said it had contacted police.

Nintendo has been targeted in the past, but said the potential risk to the public proved too much.

New dates for the postponed events will be announced later, Nintendo said.

“We sincerely apologize to everyone who was looking forward to the events,” it said.

Canceling an event due to threats is not common in Japan, a relatively safe country with low crime. Recently, however, allegations of verbal and online abuse have surfaced, raising concerns that the problem may be serious.
