“There was clearly no disrespect intended in that photo at all,” Marsh told Scene Radio.

He added: “I didn’t think much about it, and I didn’t see much on social media even though everyone told me it had exploded. There’s nothing to it.” When asked if he would do it again, Marsh said: “Probably yes, to be honest.”

The photo went viral on social media, with several Indian cricketers criticizing Marsh’s action. Indian driver Mohammed Al-Shami said he felt “hurt” by Marsh’s actions.

Al-Shami said: “The cup that all the teams in the world are competing for, the cup that you want to raise above your head, and keep your foot on that cup, did not make me happy.”

He added: “We hope that many of these series will not be shown after major tournaments again.”
