South African cricketer Quinton de Kock has confirmed his intention to retire from One Day Internationals (ODIs). De Kock, who has been part of the South African cricket setup for more than a decade, revealed that the financial lure of T20 leagues played an important role in his decision.
Although the player has loyally represented South Africa for 11 years, he said it is difficult to overlook the financial benefits of T20 leagues, especially as he approaches the end of his career. But he insisted that his first loyalty has always been towards his national team.
“T20 events – I won’t deny that there is a lot of money and as the end of your career approaches, guys want to get their final tally before their career is over. Any normal person would do that anyway,” ESPNcricinfo quoted him as telling the host broadcaster.
Besides the financial aspects, de Kock also cited his desire to spend quality time with his young family as another reason for stepping back from ODI cricket. He retired from Test cricket nearly two years ago, before the birth of his daughter Chiara, with the aim of focusing on his family life.
While his ODI career may be coming to an end, de Kock has his eyes on the future. He plans to participate in the Big Bash League (BBL) in Australia next December even as it overlaps with South Africa’s white-ball series against India.
After the World Cup, he has plans for a year to “re-evaluate” before deciding on the next chapter of his life. He will “return to society and be a normal person.” In the Indian Premier League (IPL), De Kock currently plays for Lucknow Super Giants.
Quinton de Kock was part of the match against Australia at Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on September 17. The Proteas won the match by 122 runs while scoring 27 off 39 balls. The wicket-keeper-batsman will retire from ODIs after the 2023 World Cup in India, scheduled to begin on October 5.
