Second Test between India and South Africa: Rohit Sharma backs Shubman Gill’s batting at number three, says ‘he prefers this number’ – Magazine Creations

Although youngster Shubman Gill failed to impress while playing against South Africa at Centurion Stadium in the first Test, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma backed him to excel at number three in Test cricket.

Earlier in the first Test, Gill – who was batting at number three – struggled to produce a big outing in the first Test. He hit two and 26 at SuperSport Park and fell to Pacers’ Nandre Burger and Marco Jansen in the first and second rounds respectively. Gill’s average in the Test format is a dismal 31.06 in 19 matches.

“There’s not much difference (when opening the batting at No. 3). It only takes one ball for No. 3 to come in. And sometimes when an opener is hit, No. 3 has to come out and open the innings. I don’t see much difference there. “Jill is smart and understands his batting well,” Rohit Sharma told reporters ahead of the second Test.

Looking at Gill’s performance in Test matches in 2023, he has not been up to par, having made just 258 runs over 11 innings.

“He prefers that number. He batted in the Ranji Trophy at that number around that position. He has opened in Test and limited-overs matches but number 3 has been his favourite. He feels he can do well for us in that position. It’s an individual thing,” Rohit added. “It’s about how you think in certain situations.”

“I hated batting at number 3 and that’s my opinion. You either open or wait a bit to come down the order to bat at number 5 or 6. Since I started opening, from 3 onwards until number 7, I haven’t done that,” Rohit added. The right position for anyone.

India will now aim to square the series in the second and final Test against South Africa in Cape Town, starting January 3.
