Indian star opener Shubman Gill has become the best batsman in the world in the ICC ODI rankings, ending Pakistan skipper Babar Azam’s reign at number one since April 14, 2021.
According to the ICC’s latest ODI rankings, Gill is at the top with 830 points, while Babar Azam is trailing behind with 224 points. Gill, who fulfilled his dream this year, had been closely trailing Babar in the ODI rankings all year, finally overtaking him on Wednesday and reaching the top of the ODI rankings for the first time in his career.
Gill scored 1449 runs in 2023 with an average of 63 and a strike rate of 103.72. The young Indian batting prodigy hit 7 centuries and 5 half-centuries during the year with a highest score of 208.
During the current World Cup, Gill missed the first few matches due to dengue fever but over the next six matches, the right-handed batsman managed to provide a solid start for the Men in Blue as he scored 219 runs at an average of 36.50 and a strike rate of 96.90. In comparison, Babar has scored 282 runs in his eight innings so far at an average of 40.28 and a strike rate of 82.69.
Mohammed Siraj becomes No. 1 player in ODI:
Coming back to his best bowling performances during the ongoing World Cup, Mohammed Siraj has become the No. 1 ODI bowler in the world. Siraj leads the standings with 709 points, followed by Keshav Maharaj with 694 points and Adam Zampa with 662 points.
In more happy news for India, veteran batsman Virat Kohli has jumped three places to reach number four in the ICC ODI rankings. Moreover, India’s No. 4 batsman Shreyas Iyer has jumped 17 places to reach 18th in the ODI batting rankings.
