South African ‘Blade Runner’ Oscar Pistorius granted parole 10 years after killing his girlfriend – Magazine Creations

Former South African Paralympic star Oscar Pistorius, who was jailed in 2014 for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, has been granted parole effective January 5, the Department of Correctional Services said on Friday.

Pistorius, known as “Blade Runner” for his carbon fiber prosthetic legs, went from a public hero as a Paralympic champion to a convicted murderer in hearings that captured the world’s attention a decade ago.

Pistorius shot and killed Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day 2013.

A higher court initially sentenced him to five years in prison in 2014 for premeditated murder, but in late 2015 the Supreme Court of Appeal found him guilty of murder after an appeal by prosecutors.

He was sent back to prison for six years in 2016, less than half the 15-year minimum sentence sought by prosecutors.

In 2017, the High Court doubled his sentence to 13 years and five months, saying a six-year sentence was “shockingly lenient”.
