World Cup 2023: Pakistan fined 20% of match fees due to delay in calculating fees against South Africa – Magazine Creations

Pakistan have been fined 20 per cent of their match fee for slow overs in their Cricket World Cup match against South Africa in Chennai on Friday.

“Pakistan have been fined 20 per cent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over against South Africa in a league match of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 on Friday,” an ICC statement said.

The ICC Code of Conduct states that players will be fined five percent of their match fee for each time they fail to bowl within the allotted time.

Field umpires Alex Wharf and Paul Reiffel, third umpire Richard Illingworth and fourth umpire Richard Kettleborough settled the charge after Pakistan’s loss to South Africa. Pakistani captain Babar Azam accepted the punishment.

Pakistan have won just two of their six World Cup appearances this year, and the 1992 champions need to win their remaining three matches to have any chance of qualifying for the semi-finals.

Their next encounter comes in Kolkata on Tuesday, where Pakistan takes on Bangladesh in what looks to be a must-win encounter.

Richie Richardson of the ICC’s elite match referees panel imposed the penalty after Babar Azam’s side were adjudged four short of the target after time allowances were taken into account.

In accordance with Clause 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Staff, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five percent of their match fee for each failure on their part to bowl within the allotted time.

Babar admitted to the crime and accepted the proposed punishment, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

Field umpires Alex Wharf and Paul Reiffel, third umpire Richard Illingworth and fourth umpire Richard Kettleborough settled the charge.

Coming into the match, Pakistan were bowled out for 270 runs in 46.4 overs, and knocks from skipper Babar Azam (50), Saud Shakeel (53) and Shadab Khan (43) were crucial. Tabrez Shamsi (4/60) and Marko Janssen (3/43) were SA’s best bowlers.

In a close chase of 271, SA kept losing wickets at regular intervals but a knock from Aiden Markram (91) proved more than enough to help the team to a memorable win.
