Virat Kohli has become the first batsman in the world to score 50 ODI centuries, breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s famous record of 49 centuries. Virat Kohli today reached his remarkable 50th ODI century in the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup and became the all-time leading century scorer.
Virat Kohli also surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s record of the most runs in a single World Cup. It surpassed the 673 runs made by Tendulkar in the 2003 World Cup.
Virat Kohli, 35, reached his century with two fast bowlers Lockie Ferguson, after facing 106 balls, hitting eight fours and a six to break the record of 49 ODI hundreds he shared with Sachin Tendulkar.
Kohli raised his arms high and then knelt down and bowed to the fans with his helmet on after reaching triple figures in the semi-final against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium. He was 100 not out after facing 106 balls in an almost fluke-free innings.
He did so at the home ground of his former India team-mate, hitting Tendulkar’s brilliant one to those who applauded at the Wankhede Stadium.
Earlier, Virat Kohli’s 49th ODI century came on his 35th birthday as he once again rose to the occasion and showed no weakness against South Africa’s strong bowling line-up.
The Proteas tried six different bowlers against Kohli and they all came up empty as the Indian put up another show at the iconic Eden Gardens ground to draw level with Tendulkar and help his side amass a massive total of 326/5.
Kohli was given ample support from Shreyas Iyer (77) through the middle and always looked in control as India registered another win to ensure they finish the group stage at the top of the standings.
